The Engineering Design Process

Many engineers use a structured design process in order to meet customer’s needs. The process provides structure to a project, and encourages creativity. The objective raw data that is collected during the process can also help to reduce the chance of bias and encourage more accurate decision-making. The process of engineering also shows that setbacks and failures can be valuable sources of data for future projects.

Problem definition is the very first stage of the engineering design process. Engineers must be clear about what their product will do and the reasons for its existence. This is a crucial step for the rest of the engineering process.

After the problem has been identified, it is crucial to get as much information about the solution to the need as is possible. This can be accomplished through conducting research, asking tough questions and brainstorming ideas. This is where engineering acuity shines through and is where the most innovative ideas can be formulated.

Engineers should identify possible solutions, analyze the pros and cons of each one, and select the most suitable. The solution should also be able of meeting the project’s requirements (e.g. Cost, materials space, time, etc.) are all significant factors.

It is a good thing to create a prototype after choosing the best solution. Then tests can be carried out to see if the product does what it is supposed to do. In identifying any flaws in the early stages it cuts down overall development time and can save the cost of fixing issues later on.
